The Judy Greer effect: Why a ridiculously talented actress gets stuck with so many thankless roles

The simple and sad fact is that the vast majority of female roles only exist because the woman is there to be a plot device for a male writer’s male character’s story line. It’s as if, in film land, women only exist to serve men.

There is a major pent-up anger there among many women that Hollywood needs to show that a person who is female has her own dreams and life outside of her relationships with men and boys.

This is perhaps why there was such a violent reaction to the way Joss Whedon handled Black Widow’s story arc in Avengers 2 … the *only* main female hero was turned into a fawning girlfriend…
